Units within the Division

:
  1. Biotechnology & Molecular Biology
  2. Biochemistry & Environmental Biochemistry

Broad activities of the Division

  • Molecular diagnosis of diseases during various epidemics eg. Dengue, Hepatitis (HBV/ HCV), HIV, H1N1 Swine Flu, H5N1 Avian influenza, Chikungunya, Anthrax, MDR-TB, Neisseria meningitides, Salmonella typhi & paratyphi, Malaria, Leishmania and other epidemic-prone diseases etc. and outbreak;
  • Chemical analysis of water for fluoride toxicity, genotoxicity, iodine deficiency disorders (IDD), and estimation of bio-chemical profile;
  • Operational research;
  • Manpower development, advisory role and other multifarious activities towards prevention and control of a cascade of epidemic prone disease of larger public health importance.
  • The division is collaborating with different divisions of NICD and with outside organizations/Institutes.

Unit 1: Biotechnology & Molecular Biology Laboratory

Broad Activities:

  • Molecular Diagnosis & Molecular Epidemiology of over 25 epidemic-prone diseases of greater public health importance viz. Swine flu, Polio, Dengue, Chikunguneya, Hepatitis, HIV, SARS, Avian influenza, Meningitis, Anthrax, Rabies, Leptospirosis, MDR-TB, Kala-azar, Malaria, etc.
  • DNA Fingerprinting/Gene Sequencing, PCR/RT-PCR for ultimate diagnosis of pathogens.
  • Tracking the source of infection of emerging/re-emerging diseases.
  • Molecular differentiation of strains, detection of virulent/drug resistant forms.
  • Genotyping/Sub-typing of strains viz., HCV, N. meningitidis.
  • Maintenance of “Gene Bank” of important disease pathogens.
  • Molecular typing of drug resistant M. tuberculosis, S.aureaus and K.pneumoniae

Unit 2 : Biochemistry & Environmental Biochemistry

Broad activities :

  • Specialized referral services and support to outbreak investigations for providing supportive data related to biochemistry profiles on clinical specimens collected during specific investigations and outbreaks.
  • Analysis of iodine in salt and urine samples for Iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) analysis, thyroid function test in referred serum samples, chemical analysis of water for fluoride toxicity, and training for man power development under NIDDCP.
  • Studies on pesticides poisoning particularly Genotoxicity.
