  Lab/Unit details: One Laboratory having facilities for maintenance of sandfly (Phlebotomas, argentipes) colony is available at NCDC, Patna Branch.

 

Mandate of the Branch:

 

To investigate possible causes of reappearance of Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) and other aspects of epidemiology and Control, NCDC Patna branch was established in the year 1976 with the following mandate:

 

  1. To carry out detailed entomological studies on the presence, distribution, population dynamics of Kala-azar vector, dynamics of transmission and vector control measures.
  2. To undertake detailed parasitological surveys to assess the magnitude of problem in the various KA affected districts.
  3. To recommend suitable drug therapy and vector control strategy.
  4. To develop trained manpower for the effective surveillance and control of Kala-azar.

 

Activities under taken in the branch:

  1. Maintenance of sand fly colonies at the branch
  2. Monitoring of sand fly density during pre- and post IRS activities in KA affected districts of Bihar state.
  3. Participation in various technical activities/meetings/trainings organized by State Health authorities/ICMR on VBD particularly Kala-azar and Lymphatic Filariasis.
  4. Entomological surveillance for AES/JE Vector in various endemic districts of North Bihar.
  5. Entomological Surveillance of dengue vector in urban areas of dengue affected districts.
  6. Investigation of outbreaks of various communicable diseases in the State as and when needed.
  7. Support to State Health Department on various issues pertaining to communicable diseases.

 

Research projects:

  1. Study – I “Entomological Surveillance” in context with JE/AES outbreak at Muzaffarpur, Sitamarhi & East Champaran district in Bihar
  2. Study –II “Pre-IRS (Indoor Residual Spray) Kala azar Vector (Sand Fly) Surveillance in District- Saran” in context with Kala-azar elimination programme in Bihar
