Broad outline of activities of Branch



  •   To study the Epidemiology of major communicable diseases prevalent in this area.
  •   To assist in investigations on the outbreak of communicable diseases in this region.
  •   To undertake studies on the taxonomy, biology, ecology, etc. of heaematophagus arthropods of   public  health importance.
  •   To maintain cyclic colonies of vector mosquito species and to supply on demand to academic and Public Health institutions for experimental purpose.
  •   To impart training to the public health/academicpersonnel on various aspects.

The Unit has two sections:

  1. a) Coonoor Branch  b) Field Station, Mettupalayam.  


a) Coonoor Branch


a) Maintenance of Cyclic colonies of Rat Flea

b) Monitoring the implementation of Integrated Diseases Surveillance Project (IDSP) in the state of Tamil Nadu.

 c) Water quality monitoring in Coonoor urban area.

Training / Manpower Development:



During 2008


a) One day training has been given to about 40 Students and faculties of PSG Nursing College Coimbatore on various aspects of Communicable Diseases and control on two occassions.

b) 4 students from JSS PharmacyCollege, Udagamandalam and 3 students from Bharathidasan University Tiruchy have done their post-graduate project work during the year.     

During 2009


One Health Inspector & One Health Asstt. from Port health Organization, Tuticorin  has been trained on various aspects of Communicable Diseases and Control from 21st to 24th Sep, 2009.

During 2010


a) One day training has been given to 44 Students and 2 faculties of PSG Nursing College, Coimbatore on various aspects of Communicable Diseases and control on 24th Nov, 2010.

b) 8 WHO/FETP participants visited this branch on 17th September, 2010 and they were appraised on various on going research activities.

c) Project work carried out by 2 students from JSS Pharmacy College, Ooty, (TN) during 2010

a) Plague surveillance in the erstwhile Plague endemic areas of Nilgiris District.

b) Study of mortality pattern in Coonoor urban area.

  • Dr. N. Balakrishnan, Deputy Director participated  22nd Interstate Plague Coordination meeting from 10th & 11th June 2008. at Bangalore .
  • Dr. N. Balakrishnan, Deputy Director, participated as a faculty in WHO/NCDC Training course on Plague at Bangalore on 02.10.2008 

During 2009


  • Dr. N. Balakrishnan, Deputy Director participated in the IInternational Congress of Global Warming on Bio- diversity Management on Conservation at Bharathiyar University, Coimbatore on 12th Feb, 2009 and presented a research paper entitled “Bio-ecology of mosquitoes in Nilgiris hills and surrounding areas with special reference to disease vectors.
  • Dr.N.Balakrishnan, Deputy Director Participated in Epi days meeting jointly organized by NIE(ICMR), Chennai & NCDC, Delhi from 4th to 6th May, 2009 at Delhi.
  • Dr.N.Balakrishnan, Deputy Director attended the 3rd Conference of Medical Arthropodology Organized by CRME, ICMR, Madurai,(TN) on 18th & 19th Dec, 2009 and presented a paper entitled “ Studies on the prevalence of dengue vectors in urban and periurban areas of the nilgiris – a preliminary report”
  • Dr.N.Balakrishnan, Deputy Director & Dr.Pranab Jyoti Bhuyan, Asstt. Director (PH) Participated in the review meeting of Branch Officers and NCDC Centenary celebrations at NCDC, Delhi on 29th and 30th July, 2009.
  • Dr.N.Balakrishnan, Deputy Director participated in the Interstate Plague coordination meeting held at NCDC, Bangalore on 23rd & 24th Dec, 2009.
  •  Dr.P.J.Bhuyan, Assistant Director (PH) has participated as facilitator in training programme in “Surveillance for prepared and Response for Epidemic Prone Disease” at NCDC, Bangalore from 14th to 19th Dec, 2009.
  • Dr.N.Balakrishnan, Deputy Director delivered a talk on Utility of Medical plants for Control of Public Health Vectors” in an AICTE training programme, organized by the JSS University, Ooty, on 7th October, 2009.
  • Dr.N.Balakrishnan, Deputy Director attended the X – International Symposium on Vector & Vector Borne Diseases Organized by NIMR, field Station, & Goa University, Goa from 4th to 6th Nov, 2009 and presented a paper entitled “Studies on the prevalence of soil transmitted helminthes among school children in urban and rural areas of the Nilgiris districts of Tamil Nadu State”.
  • Dr.N.Balakrishnan, Deputy Director attended 3rd Conference on Medical Arthropodology organized by CRME (ICMR) Madurai on 18th & 19th Dec, 2009.

During 2010


  • Dr.N.Balakrishnan, Deputy Director,visited NCDC, Delhi from 28th to 30th July, 2010 to participate in the Branch Officer’s meeting and NCDC Anniversary Celebration at Delhi from 28.7.2010 to 31.7.2010.
  •  Dr. N. Balakrishnan, Deputy Director participated as a Faculty in the WHO/NCDC Training programme on Plague surveillance, Prevention and Control of Plague conducted at NCDC Branch, Bangalore on 21st and 24th Sep, 2010 in the above programme Dr. P.J. Bhuyan Assistant Director (PH) participated.
  •  The Officer’s and staff participated in various meetings / work shops conducted by the Town Official Language Implementation Committee (TOLIC) of the Nilgiri district. The Officer In charge has been awarded a special prize (Kozhiz 2010) for his efforts on initiating and implementation of functioning in official language in the NCDC, Coonoor Branch

Other activities


  • Entomological surveillance of vector of Yellow fever, Dengue and Chikungunya mosquitoes in and around Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Hyderabad (AP). During 10th to 14th November, 2010. 
  • Monitoring the Implementation of Yaws Eradication Programme (YEP) activities and sero-surveillance in Children in the state of Tamil Nadu.
  • Dr.N Balakrishnan, Deputy Director visited Coimbatore and Nilgiris districts of Tamil Nadu during the active search of cases from 21st to 24th July, 2010 (pre monsoon search) in endemic area. Dr.N.Balakrishnan, Deputy Director visited DPH & PM, Chennai (TN) and Villupuram district in connection with monitoring and coordination of YEP activities and verification of RPR positive cases in Villupuram HUD (TN) from 9th to 13th August, 2010. The activities of sero surveillance in Children in the districts Salem and Krishnagiri of Tamil Nadu State has been carried out during 1st to 12th April, 2010 and in Salem district during 30th January to 1st February, 2011 by the team from NCDC, Coonoor Branch.
